Furnace Starting and Stopping Every Few Minutes? The Calgary Version of Short Cycling
A furnace that starts, runs for two to five minutes and shuts down — then does it again — is short cycling. Change the filter first; a blocked one overheats the furnace and trips its limit switch, and it is the single most common cause. Short cycling is not a breakdown yet; it is the furnace protecting itself, over and over. Something is making it shut the burner down early — usually heat that cannot get out, or a flame it cannot prove — and each restart wears the igniter and the blower a little more. Left through a Calgary cold snap, the fault that was a $150 flame-sensor clean in November becomes a dead furnace at −30 °C in January.
This city produces the fault more than most because of the chinook. A furnace that has run for eight hours a day for a week suddenly runs eight minutes a day for three warm afternoons; the flame sensor films over during those short runs, and the first cold night afterwards the furnace lights, cannot confirm a flame, and shuts off in seconds. The steps below sort the filter-and-airflow causes from the flame-and-safety ones.
What to do, in order
Watch one full cycle
Stand by the furnace. Note how long it runs before it quits, whether the burners light at all, and whether the fan keeps going after the burners stop. Two to five minutes of running then a stop is overheating; lighting and quitting within seconds is a flame-sensing problem; never lighting is an ignition problem.
Change the filter
Pull it, hold it to a light, and put in a new one regardless. A filter blocked with a summer's dust or a renovation's drywall powder chokes airflow, the furnace overheats, and the limit switch opens. Wait ten minutes for the furnace to cool and let it try again.
Open every register and return
Closed bedroom registers, furniture over a return, a rug on the floor grille — anything that stops air moving through the furnace has the same effect as a blocked filter. In a Calgary two-storey where half the upstairs vents have been shut for years, this alone can cause it.
Check the outside vents
A high-efficiency furnace breathes through two white PVC pipes on an outside wall. A drift, an icicle, or frost from the exhaust at −25 °C can restrict them so the pressure switch keeps cutting the burner. Clear them by hand.
Look at the thermostat
A thermostat mounted near a register or above a heat source, or one with a very tight cycle setting, can call for heat, satisfy itself within minutes, and call again. Fan on auto, and note where the thermostat is; the thermostat page covers the settings.

What happens once you call
Most short cycling is fixed in one visit: a flame sensor cleaned or replaced, a limit switch that has drifted, a pressure switch or a condensate trap cleared, a blower capacitor. The technician should also check the heat exchanger and the venting, because the one dangerous cause of the same symptom is a blocked flue.
If the furnace is oversized for the house — common in older Calgary homes where a big single-stage unit replaced the original — it will always short-cycle in mild weather, and the honest answer is a two-stage furnace at the next replacement. That is a planning conversation, not an emergency.
What is actually shutting it down
Overheating. The furnace has a high-limit switch that opens when the heat exchanger gets too hot, which happens when air cannot carry the heat away: a blocked filter, a slow or failing blower, closed registers, or ducts that were never sized for the furnace. The burner stops, the fan runs to cool it, and it tries again. This is the version a new filter fixes.
A flame it cannot see. The flame sensor is a metal rod in the burner flame; a film of oxide on it and the control board reads “no flame” and shuts the gas off within seconds of lighting. Short chinook-week runs build that film fast. Cleaned with fine abrasive or replaced, it is one of the cheapest repairs in the trade.
A pressure switch that will not stay closed. High-efficiency furnaces prove their venting with a pressure switch before lighting. A restricted intake or exhaust, a blocked condensate trap, or a weak inducer motor makes the switch open mid-cycle. Frost on the outdoor vent at −25 °C is the Calgary version.
The thermostat. A tight cycle setting or a badly placed thermostat can produce short cycles from a perfectly healthy furnace. Cheap to fix, easy to overlook.
Why not just leave it
Every ignition is the hardest thing a furnace does. An igniter rated for a few thousand cycles a season is asked for ten times that; a blower starting forty extra times a day wears its bearings; a heat exchanger cycling hot and cold fatigues. The furnace also never reaches steady, efficient running, so the gas bill rises while the house stays uneven. And the failure, when it comes, comes on the coldest night — because that is when the furnace is asked to cycle the most.

Is short cycling dangerous?
Usually it is a comfort and wear problem, not a safety one. The exception is a restricted flue or a cracked heat exchanger producing the same symptom, which can put carbon monoxide into the house. If the furnace also bangs on ignition, smells hot or sooty, or a CO alarm has ever sounded, treat it as urgent and leave first.
Why does it start after a chinook?
Because for three warm days the furnace ran only in short bursts, and the flame sensor collected a film of oxide it would normally burn off during long runs. When the cold returns and the furnace lights properly again, the control board cannot confirm a flame through the film and shuts the gas off. A clean fixes it; a replacement sensor is inexpensive.
How long should a furnace cycle last?
In moderate cold, ten to fifteen minutes on and a similar time off is typical; in a −30 °C snap a correctly sized furnace may run most of the hour. Cycles of two to five minutes, repeating, are short cycling. A furnace that runs constantly in deep cold without reaching the set temperature has the opposite problem.
Will a new filter really fix it?
Often, if the cause is overheating: a blocked filter is behind more short cycling than any single part. If the furnace lights and quits within seconds, the filter is not the cause — that is the flame sensor. Change it anyway; a furnace should never run on a choked filter.
