Hail and Your Air Conditioner in Calgary: Fins, Coils, Claims and What to Do Next

Hail flattens the thin aluminum fins on an outdoor unit's coil, so air cannot pass and the system runs hot and cools poorly. Light damage is combed straight in about an hour; a punctured coil, a bent fan or a cracked housing is a replacement, and after a storm the size of August 2024 that is usually an insurance claim first. Photograph the unit before anyone touches it, switch cooling off if it is struggling, and call — the technician can tell you which case you have.

On 5 August 2024 a single evening's hail across northern Calgary produced roughly $2.8 billion in insured damage — the Insurance Bureau of Canada's initial estimate, later revised past $3 billion — and hit something like one house in five. Roofs, siding and windshields made the news. The outdoor air conditioning units on the north and west sides of tens of thousands of houses did not, and a good number of them are still running badly two summers later.

What hail does to an outdoor unit

The outdoor half of an air conditioner is a condenser coil — copper tubes carrying hot refrigerant, wrapped in thousands of paper-thin aluminum fins that give the heat somewhere to go — with a fan on top pulling air through it. The fins are the whole point and they are the weakest thing in the yard: they bend under a fingernail. Hailstones the size of a toonie fold them flat in patches; egg-sized stones fold whole panels and can pierce the copper behind them.

Flattened fins block airflow. The refrigerant cannot shed its heat, pressure climbs, the compressor works harder and hotter, and the system either cools weakly or shuts itself down on a high-pressure safety. That is why a house can come through a storm with the unit apparently intact and then find the upstairs will not cool a week later — the damage is a slow choke, not a bang. A punctured tube is different: refrigerant escapes, the system stops cooling within days, and the unit cannot legally be recharged until the leak is repaired.

Comb it, or replace it

A fin comb is a plastic tool that straightens bent fins a row at a time. On a unit with dented patches and an undamaged coil it restores airflow to something close to new, and it is the right first move — cheap, fast, and reversible. Its limits are physical: fins that have been folded flat twice or crushed against the tube break off when straightened, and a coil with a large share of its fins gone is a coil that will never cool properly again.

The replacement decision follows the unit's age. A coil on a three-year-old system is worth replacing. A coil on a fourteen-year-old system costs a large fraction of a new unit, and a new unit brings a new compressor, a new warranty and a quieter, more efficient machine — so most technicians will show you both numbers and most homeowners choose the unit. Calgary's cooling season is short, so units here often reach that age with plenty of compressor life left, which is what makes the comb worth trying first.

The insurance sequence

Hail damage to an outdoor unit is generally covered by a standard home policy as part of the dwelling, subject to the deductible — and many Alberta policies now carry a separate, larger hail deductible. Read yours. The order of operations matters more than people expect.

  • Photograph everything before anyone touches it — the unit from all four sides, close-ups of the fins, the roof and siding nearby, the date visible. Adjusters see thousands of these; your photos are the claim.
  • Switch cooling off if the unit is struggling. Running a choked or leaking condenser can destroy the compressor, and the insurer will not pay for damage you could have prevented.
  • Report the claim promptly, with the photos, and ask whether the insurer requires their own inspection before repair. After a citywide storm, adjusters are weeks out; ask whether emergency mitigation is allowed meanwhile.
  • Get a written assessment from a technician — comb or replace, and why. A quote that names the storm and the damage is what turns a claim into a cheque.
  • Check the roof and siding at the same time. A coil that was hit hard usually sits under a roof that was too, and the claims go together.

Before the next one

Two decisions cost little and matter a lot. Placement: Calgary's storms arrive from the west and north-west, so a unit on the east or south face of the house, or under an eave or deck overhang, is spared the worst of it — worth raising with any installer before a first install or a replacement. A hail guard: a louvred or mesh cover fitted over the coil faces, sized so airflow is not restricted. They are inexpensive relative to a coil and they work; ask the technician to fit one when the unit is replaced or serviced.

A cover thrown over the unit in a storm warning helps too, if you are home — but never run the system covered, and take it off before the heat returns.

Common questions

Hail dented the fins but the AC still runs. Do I need to do anything?

Yes — have the fins combed before the next hot week. Dented fins choke airflow, the compressor runs hotter and harder, and a unit that seems fine in a mild week trips or fails in a 30 °C one. Combing is quick and cheap on a sound coil; leaving it is how a small storm becomes a compressor.

Is hail damage to an air conditioner covered by home insurance?

Usually, as part of the dwelling, minus the deductible — and many Alberta policies now have a separate hail deductible that is larger than the standard one. Photograph the unit before repair, report promptly, and get a technician's written assessment. Check the policy's wording on outdoor equipment and on “wear and tear” exclusions.

Can the refrigerant just be topped up after a hail leak?

No. A pierced tube is a leak, and recharging a leaking system is not legal in Alberta either — the province's Ozone-depleting Substances and Halocarbons Regulation prohibits recharging leaking equipment. The leak has to be repaired or the coil replaced first, then the system pressure-tested and recharged by a technician with federal ODS certification. A top-up alone would be gone by the next heat wave.

Do hail guards actually work?

Yes, for the fins — a louvred or mesh guard fitted over the coil faces takes the impact instead of the aluminum. It has to be sized so it does not restrict airflow, and it does nothing for the fan or the top of the unit. Relative to a coil replacement it costs very little; ask for one at the next service.
